Hiraya - 1978 Tartan 34 C -

Believe it or not, we found this beauty in Bozeman Montana…. in February… in a blizzard.

We had started looking at boats several years ago. Never living on one we thought it would be a good idea to really take our time looking around and find the perfect one for us. Well, being in land locked Utah most of our looking was online. We had thought we would plan a trip to the coast at some point and physically walk on some boats. During this online search we came across a boat listing in Bozeman, MT and had two thoughts. One, what kind of boat could possibly be in Montana and two, we have to go look at this boat.

Bozeman is just shy of a seven hour drive from our home. We took a long weekend and drove up to check her out. She was tucked nice and warm in a green house. Come to find out she spent her winters in the Sea of Cortez and summers in Montana. Her family had recently upgraded to a larger boat to accommodate their needs.

Our first impression was good. She was in such good shape. Clean, well cared for and maintained. She literally could have been splashed, sails raised, and away with the wind she’d go. However we decided to “sleep on it” and weigh all the pros and cons. She was a little smaller and older than most sailboats that we had been looking at. At that time we still had two kids in high school. So we weren’t in an extreme hurry to make a decision.

About a month later, and many conversations, we returned to Bozeman to take another look. The second time stepping inside we knew she was the one. We had decided that her condition alone would save us a lot of headache in the future. We had a plan to add a few items and what better place to do that then on land and at home.

We had spent more money at first for a very solid boat. She really did just need the upgrades that we felt we needed. Water maker, pressurized water, a little more power, a windless, and update the cushions and curtains, and new deck paint. Shouldn’t be too bad right? After all we still had two years until we really could set sail.

Of course our story begins with refits. We don’t want our videos to be refits alone. Or how to videos. We are not masters at any rate. But we may have answers to some of the questions that are harder to find answers for then others.

She is a 1978 Tartan 34 C, a classic. Most of her is original. She was built in Ohio and enjoyed her early years in The Great Lakes Area. As far as we know she has had just two previous owners. Most upgrades over the years serve their purpose well and look good too. We believe ours are coming along well. We are both learning so much.
