rainbows

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain” -Dolly Parton

Have you ever felt that every time you turned around something was raining on your parade? There you are minding your own business, walking  down the sidewalk, making plans just as that wheel from a passing car hits the puddle and the entire puddle ends up covering you leaving you looking like a drowned cat. Plans ruined!

But are they really? Is every second from the moment the water hits ruined? Or do you start to realized that the events taking place may have some joy in them. You may not notice it at first, but as  you focus on the positives your perception of the moments will turn around.

“The Adventure begins when everything goes to hell” -Sam

We have had plenty of opportunities to practice positive thinking. On one of our trips to Costa Rica we ventured out to see the cloud forest. Ended up being lost for hours with only  what seemed like inches of visibility. Found ourselves going the wrong way on the on ramp at 3 am trying to get to the right road to make it home. Some would say it was crazy.

Instead of being scared we practice Spanish, spoke with locals we wouldn’t have otherwise met, and had so many laughs our abs hurt. Looking back, this is one of the memories that is brought up the most.

Another time, Sam had taken the kids up to Shelley, Idaho to watch the solar eclipse. They spent the night at a friends house the night before so they didn’t have to worry about parking or hotel, but the easiness of getting there kind of hid the next day drama of getting home. The 4 hour drive turned into 8. Luckily the kids turned the radio up loud, rolled the windows down and sang along to the radio, played games, and truly enjoyed the time together. Not that they would want to do it again, but it still ends up being the memory brought up most when talking about that trip. I am so grateful these guys can go with the flow and put up with the rain so they can enjoy the rainbows.
