On January 22nd we raised anchor at 7am just as the sun was beginning to rise. Even though there were light winds forecasted we couldn’t stay in Cabo San Lucas any more. We needed to find serenity.
Three hours in the winds had diminished so much that we had to motor. Not long after we caught up to our new friends Andy and Katharyn on SV Anna Maria. Side by side we motored along and began seeing whales off into the distance. We talked boat to boat and enjoyed the moment.
Then a whale breached right next to our boat. We slowed the motor and came to a stop as more and more whales came closer and closer to our boats. The excitement in our voices over the radio probably was felt by anyone who was listening. As our boats drifted in neutral side by side we watched the whales breach, jump, side land, back flop, belly flop, and twirl around each other for hours. We talked boat to boat and could see the amazement and wonder in each others faces. It was by far one of our most memorable and favorite moments in time.
The graceful and powerful large animals that can leap out of the water like that and not take us out was a connecting moment between whale and human spirits. Their giant eyes looking deep into our souls as they swam by. Forever thankful for that moment in time with them.
I think we counted close to 20 whales that day. Separated in pods breaching in different areas. Through the amazement we carefully watch each set as to not get too close or get in their way as we floated along. We continued on to Los Failes arriving just before sunset. The wind had gained speed after we passed the whales allowing us to sail in.
But the fetch had grown. Knowing that the wind was suppose to be dieing we anchored. We were quite rolly for the first couple hours but by the time we went to bed the wind died and sea calmed and we slept well.
In the morning we woke to a beautiful crescent bay with Mobula rays randomly jumping out of the water. There is a fish camp and an RV park. We will go in to explore.
